Trump is restructuring the World's order against the United States interest
The newly elected president is willingly giving up his soft power acting weak against authoritarian nations invading liberal democracies and setting up a new American empire
I was hoping to get through more than three articles to end up mentioning Trump, I mean since he took office barely a day has gone by since he’s been in the news, or one of his or Musk's minions has been setting off fires in various regions of the United States government.
I could talk about the fact that he has a Russian asset in charge of the nation's security or the fact that a guy who has got brain worms is in charge of the nation's health (while at the same time firing anybody in their departments who don’t kneel to King Trump so it’ll be the stupid leading the crazies)
Even the fact that many transgender people are likely to be targeted by the federal government now and the people who “Disliked them” will now be targeting them as they’ll feel emboldened by Trump to see Nancy Mace and the newly elected congresswomen from Delaware Sarah McBride and Nancy's blatant targeting of this women leading to Nancy a fully grown women repeatedly using the term Tr**** in a tweet directed at Mcbride.1 And later for a speaker on the house floor to refer to Mcbride as the “Congressman from Delaware”2
But I won't focus on that part mainly because many people either directly voted for republican candidates who support this or indirectly voted for them by voting third party (It's a two-party system that's how they work)
What I will be focusing on however is the new president's foreign policy, now to put my cards on the table, I'm not a foreign policy expert but I take deference to people like Rory Stewart, Former MP and Minister for international development who knows a thing or two about foreign affairs, Adam Kinzinger a former congressman who fought in the armed services and went to places like Iraq and knows how to negotiate with enemies. And I’ll be relying on my philosophy on how to approach foreign affairs (Which is probably a lot better than Trump’s but never mind.)
Gaza
First of all, I'm going to quickly mention Gaza which is maybe why the Democrats lost in places like Dearborn Michigan. First of all, I generally support Israel, that's an unpopular opinion on the left nowadays but I do especially when you look at the history of the region and all the wars it’s Israel vs’s all the Arabic countries around them. But here is the twist I also support Palestine, Not Hamas which some people on the left have been doing, i support the two-state solution which has been the standard international plan for the region since 1947. This is where we get onto the Trump. Like most American presidents he supports Israel but unlike his predecessors, he thinks that Gaza should be turned into a real estate opportunity which includes about 2 million Gazans to leave and never return. Most experts have considered this plan at attempted ethnic cleansing and has led to massive condemnation across the world, apart from Israel who Prime minister was grinning like a mischievous cat sat next to Trump when he announced it. This will probably lead to more tension within the region and lead to more wars.
Trump doesn’t care though, does he? He said this himself when describing how Gaza would be rebuilt, he didn’t say “We” he said “I” will rebuild. He just sees it as a way to enrich himself or his immediate family. It’s just another reminder that we don’t live in the same world order anymore and speaking of which.
Ukraine:
When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, I have to be honest I thought we needed to rescue President Zelensky from Kyiv as we all across the West the Russian military would crush the Ukrainians But we were all wrong and when the Russians failed to take the strategically important airport just north of Kyiv the west started putting more and more aid into Ukraine. Suddenly the post-Cold War consensus shattered, where Russia interfered in its bordering countries and the West ignored it across Europe the sense of resolve increased against Russian aggression. The ultimate Joker card that Russia had which was nuclear weapons became less and less relevant after each red line they drew in the sand was washed away by Western support of Ukraine.
This was until Trump turned his attention to the place, this started with his envoy to Ukraine I believe stating that for peace to occur Ukraine would have to hold an election something which experts in Ukrainian law said would be one, impractical considering half the country is at risk of missile attacks which Russia has had no qualms with attacking civilians for, and two would be illegal as Ukraine can’t undergo election in times of martial law.
Now in recent times, he announced his big peace plan which is to allow Russia to stay in the places they invaded and refuse Ukrainian entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Giving Putin everything he wants, which is a ceasefire for a few years it lets him rearm and reman his armies and go again in a few years. And without NATO protection they would be exactly where we are right now.
But the feeling in the Eastern European NATO nations would have been that all Russia needs to do is run out the clock of Western support. Potentially damaging the NATO philosophy of an attack on one means an attack on all.
USAID:
The real president of the USA Elon Musk3 has been on a crusade throughout the US government and his biggest scalp has been the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). And even though it makes up something like 5% (at most) of the US federal government budgets it's been the biggest target for Musk’s cuts. And the guy who was elected to be the president has just allowed Musk to destroy the department. (Which is funded by Congress but if Congress could be relied on to do their jobs, then Trump wouldn’t be president right now)
Musk has been targeting this department for “Fraud” he’s seen although this “fraud” apparently includes 50 million to be spent in Gaza on condoms which the administration claimed were being used to make bombs...
It would be unsurprising for you to hear that not only is the thing wrong, but they are also using another aid program and mixing them. According to the Hill, this appears to be about USAID giving 68 million to the International Medical Corps which covers lifesaving treatments in Palestine, not family planning or bomb-making classes.4
Now that is not the only thing that is going to be cut some of that aid has been going to places in Africa to fight the HIV epidemic which if stopped could kill 6 million people in South Africa alone.5
Not only is the bad in the Moral sense as is leaving 8 million people with a serious and deadly disease to progress if not treated properly it is also bad in the political sense because they were dependent on US aid to survive which means in the quickly establishing world order in this century they are likelier to ally with the west then authoritarian countries like China and Russia, and this has been an aspect in which compared to China and their “Belt and road” initiative, the US has been lacking.6
Europe:
If there has been a common thread in Trump’s approach to foreign policy so far it is that the era of America being the world's policeman is over for the foreseeable future. and while this has implications across the world from stability in the Sahel region of Africa and the human rights abuses in places like China and Russia.
But in this section the focus is going to be on Europe and Trump’s approach must mean we in the UK and across the channel in Europe must take a more active approach in our defence against Russia. While I don’t know the situation in mainland Europe what I do know in the UK when the war first started some experts said that if we had a full-scale war with the Russians our army would expend the ammo reserves within a week of fighting7. This is mainly because of the post-Cold War peace in Europe and vast cuts to the armed services for the last 14 years.
But something we can quickly do which is what I suspect our Prime Minister Kier Starmer has recognised is that we can get closer to the EU maybe in the next few years region the block and be honest that Brexit hasn’t gone well, but that’ll be an article for another time.
With Trump’s second (and possibly final term) we in Europe have to acknowledge that it's no longer a foregone conclusion that the US will be on our side for the first time since 1945.
